Little Lulu - How Does a Dog Know Where Home Is?

My two youngest daughters have had a pet sitting business for nearly five years. It all started when my middle daughter eagerly wanted a dog. She wanted one since she was two years old. I don't know what possessed her to want a dog. I never grew up with the notion that I had to have a pet. So it was interesting for me to see how solid she was with the notion of getting a dog. My daughter was persistent, always looking for an angle to get a dog. I even found the word "dog" listed on my grocery shopping list from time to time when she learned to write.

But I always knew if we got a dog, the work would fall on me. So I came up with a plan with the girls, which was to create their own pet sitting business in order for them to prove to me that they were responsible enough to take care of a pet, and earn the money to purchase what they needed including food, vet bills, heart worm medicine, that sort of thing.

So in 2004 they put out flyers and told neighbors about their business. Within weeks they had their first few jobs, and since then have taken care of an assortment of animals including kittens, fish, hamsters, rabbits, lizards, parakeets, chickens and of course, dogs.

In most cases they take care of pets at the owners' home. They are entrusted with getting their mail, bringing in packages, and taking good, loving care of their pets.

Well, this Thanksgiving weekend, they took care of a friend's dog at our home. Dogs require more constant attention than any of the other aforementioned animals. This dog, a Springer Spaniel, has a lot of energy and is at times unpredictable. If she were a human, we might classify her as a party animal. She has boundless energy. If only dogs could speak we could confirm that. But we love her, she is a very sweet little puppy. We've taken care of her many times before with no problem. But this weekend my husband accidentally left our backyard gate opened when he went biking earlier in the morning. Lulu was in our backyard for hours and I did not even think of checking our gates because our own dog, a golden retriever, has never wandered far from home. We've even left her outside by accident when saying goodbye to friends and she quietly passes between us and the front door and we don't realize she's outside. Hours later we find her staring at our front door sending brainwaves to us to let her in. She's not even mad at us, she just seems like she was wondering what took so long.

Anyway, in Little Lulu's case, she was in our backyard just sniffing around and lying in the sun all morning. But when my husband and his buddy came through our backyard gate after biking in their gear it may have scared Lulu a little bit seeing them in their dark sunglasses and helmet and she ran out the side gate. We were just moments behind her when we realized she got out. My husband went tearing out our street searching for her, to no avail. The girls got their scooters and criss-crossed through the streets and yelled her name throughout our neighborhood. But no Lulu. Then I suggested to my husband that he go to Lulu's home, about a mile from here. Sure enough - there was Little Lulu. She was in the front of her home, guarding it. She would not let my husband or friend get near her. So I came in my van with our dog, Koa, (who Lulu loves) and that did the trick. She went back in our van and back to our home safe and sound.

My question is, how did Lulu know how to get to her home? She's been here a number of times, but was that history of being here before enough for her to know how to get back home on her own? It's truly amazing, and fortunately for all, a happy ending.

Girls Night Out--San Francisco

Last weekend I had a fantastic time with a group of friends in San Francisco. Yes, we had a Girls Night Out or I guess more of a Mom's Night Out in The City!

Our little getaway started out with several hours of shopping at 888 Brannan (formerly known as The Gift Center), followed by a few in room cocktails and dinner out at Slanted Door (YUM!!). Oh and of course a nightcap at the Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel.

Every part of the day was fantastic. From deciding on what color Pashmina to buy, to trying on big (I mean BIG) cocktail rings, to enjoying delicious lemon drops and shaking beef we all had a great time. Two of the girls/moms even brought fun items that made us all feel like teenagers.... false eyelashes and a huge make-up tray. With a little help from our friends, we all got beautified (oh how I love those lashes) and hit the town.

I gotta say, a night away was good for this mother's soul. To spend time with wonderful friends and leave the carpooling, soccer game schlepping, and dinner planning behind is something every mom needs to do once in awhile.

P.S. The photo above features one of the rings. I told you it was big!

Another Milestone--Outdoor School

My daughter left on Tuesday for outdoor school. It is a week that she has been excited about and planning for since she brought the detailed packet home 3 weeks ago.

I must admit, I was surprised by her enthusiasm. After all, it seemed like only yesterday that she was the little Kindergartner girl crying most mornings when I dropped her off at school. My, how far she has come. Now, she is a responsible, self-motivated tween anxious and willing to go away for the week. To go off on her own. I'm so proud of her.

And now that she is away I have to say, I really miss her. I know she is having a great time. I know she is learning and growing and that this is an amazing experience but it feels so strange not having my only daughter around. Her brothers feel the same way. They, of course, won't admit that fact but they keeping asking, "Where's C?" And when I ask, "Do you miss her?" They quietly say, "yes."

She'll be home on Friday and I can't wait to pick her up (12 sharp). My plan is to take her to lunch and pepper her with questions. To pull out of her as much as she is willing to share and to tell her how much I love her and missed her.

Kicking Off the Holidays--SVMoms Style!

On Sunday, we were invited to the Silicon Valley Moms Groups' Holiday Party. It was a fantastic event held at the Garden Court Hotel in Palo Alto. The event was an opportunity to meet fellow Silicon Valley Mom bloggers as well as 20 sponsoring companies.

Although my sons had their last soccer game that day (I had been to 8 games that weekend already, so I didn't feel too guilty), I headed up to Palo Alto with my blogging partner to what promised to be a fun event full of swag. And the founders of SVMoms, delivered on that promise. It was a terrific event and we left with bags brimming with goodies.

We had such a great time--enjoying delicous food, good company (it was so nice to put faces with blogger names) and wonderful product demonstrations and samples. Each of the companies passed out samples of their products (photo cards from HP, stylish ecofriendly grocery bags from Olive Smart , Coffee-mate samples, games from Nintendo, card samples from Tiny Prints, and adorable clothing from Wati--just to name a few), or discount coupons. I felt like I was on an episode of Oprah's Favorite things show . The picture above is of us learning how to play Nintendo's Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.

I was amazed by the quality and quantity of sponsors (the SVMom founders pulled this event together in just one month) and I was more impressed by the women I met. Some have been blogging for years and have been contributors since the inception of SVMoms and others were new to the blogging world. No matter how long they had been putting fingers to keys, they all had one thing in common, a love for writing and for sharing their knowledge and experiences. It felt great to be a part of this group.

We've just posted a new article on our sister product review site, GoToGals:

Oh and by the way, my boys won their last game and got first place in their bracket at the tournament.

Photos with Friends!

We've fallen behind on our posts this week and unfortunately did not get a photo of the week theme going either. But it has been one busy week. We had a Photos with Friends photo shoot on Veteran's Day and are pleased to say that it was a huge success. We took pictures of 16 families in one day--this included 39 kids, 4 adults, 5 dogs, 2 chickens and 1 lizard--whew! It was like Old McDonald's Farm!

The photos turned out terrific. We are turning many of these precious pictures into unique Christmas gifts such as metal prints, thin wraps, accordion books, dog tags, etc. We'll be posting samples soon so that you can see all the cuties--both 2 legged and 4! If you are interested in learning more about our photo business please email us at blog.tina@yahoo.com.

Again, thanks to all our friends for your support and for letting us have this wonderful opportunity to capture what we hope will be treasured photos for years to come!

Cattle Crossing

While we were in Mexico last spring we ran into a bit of a traffic jam. Passing trucks were waving at us to slow down but we had no idea why. We soon found out as we approached dozens of steer heading straight for us. It was a bit scary at first, but once we pulled safely to the side of the road, it was quite a sight to see. They were so close, we could have reached out our window and grabbed them by the horn!

An Audience of Sunflowers

Our good friend sent this next photo in which was taken by her son. While traveling through France in the Provence region a few years ago, they stopped to check for directions. Who knew that it was really a moment to stop and get checked out by an audience of sunflowers? This field of flowers was so overwhelming and really looks like a theather filled with attentive sun flowers. Splendide!

Have a nature filled photo you'd like to submit? We have just a day to run one more photo, send to blog.tina@yahoo.com along with any interesting story - bon jour!

Help--I've Got Moths in My Pantry

I've got a little bit of nature in my pantry. It could be worse, right? I could have mice or some other infestation, but I've got moths. I don't know where they are hiding but every time I open my pantry door, I see one or two sluggish moths resting on my crown molding (yes, I've got crown molding in my pantry). They are easy to kill catch and I each time I clear them out, I think that I've gotten them all only to open the door a day later and see a few more snoozing near the ceiling.

I confess, I'm no neat freak. My pantry shelves are a little discombobulated, but I have clearly defined food shelves and appliance shelves. I've never had this problem before.

To try and combat these pests, I've thrown out any open boxes of dry goods and snacks. I've wiped down my mixers, baking pans, vases and baskets. I've vacuumed every crumb and tried to really organize this space. I've done all that I can aside from pulling everything out and fumigating. Help! Any suggestions on how to get rid of these winged pests once and for all would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.--I just couldn't bring myself to take a photo. Somehow posting a cartoon version seems less icky! Am I crazy for admitting that I've got these things in my house?

A Whale of a Tale

From one of our faithful readers, Maneesha, she sends in this story about the humpback whale. Every winter thousands of humpbacks come to the waters off of Maui to mate and give birth. Just because of the sheer number of whales that are present in the waters they were able to spot whales while sitting on the beach and even when driving along the coast. They even took a whale watching tour to get a closer look these majestic animals. They saw a couple of whales breach and both a pectoral fin & tail slapping.

During this expedition, there was a baby whale and its mother. They swam towards their boat and came within 100 yards. With the engine turned off on the boat they got to observe these two for a good bit of time. The baby stayed hidden behind the mom for most part. But when it did come out the kids were screaming with joy and the parents were clicking away.

This is something not to be missed as these are just awe inspiring animals. What's your best nature shot? Send it to blog.tina@yahoo.com and we hope to have it published - don't forget to send any story that may go along with the photo.

FlutterBy

Our theme this week is nature - be it your pet dog, cat or other animal in nature that you have a great shot of. This weekend I took a photo of a butterfly drinking up some nectar in our yard. It's amazing how this creature survives the rain, wind and other forces of nature, they seem so frail.

Give us your best nature shot by sending it to blog.tina@yahoo.com, we hope it gets published!
