Project Vision 12/2012 - Step Five: Gratitude Attitude

by Tina

One of the most important daily rituals I have is to go through a list of things I am grateful for and underscore them to put things into perspective.  Even during the most difficult times in my life, I have found so many things to be thankful for.  Having the ever-present feeling of gratitude can be the single biggest thing that can affect your whole being.

When my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago, I realized how lucky and fortunate we were to have so many friends who were willing to be there for us, bring us a meal and just keep my husband in their thoughts.  Years ago, when I was in my twenties, I divorced after being married for several years.  Even then, going through a horrible break-up was like the death of many dreams you have as a couple.  Often friendships you had as a couple take on a different texture, or break off entirely if they don't know how to cope with being friends separately.  But even in my darkest hour I feel I grew and learned more about myself, because I had to get past it.  And I am thankful for those lessons.

Having a grateful attitude is a big part of having a life vision.  Being thankful everyday is a daily part of my workflow now.

A good friend who passed away from a 5-year battle with cancer wrote my husband this wonderful letter.   These particular words he wrote resonate with me daily.

The many gifts in life illuminate when battling cancer.

It shouldn't take having cancer to feel that way.  Every single day I pause to reflect on life's gifts that are often obscure.  The richness in my life is abundant and I am so thankful for all of these treasures.

What are you grateful for?
